If you’ve spent any amount of time scrolling through the #healthyfood Instagram world, you’ve likely seen a smoothie bowl or two. These delectable and vibrantly colored breakfasts are packed full of fresh fruits, veggies and nutritional supplements and often feature acai.
What Is Acai?
Acai berries are a Brazilian superfruit native to the Amazon region. Though small, this dark purple berry packs in a lot of nutrition. Fresh berries have an earthy taste, which is often described as a cross between blackberries and unsweetened chocolate.
Unfortunately, fresh acai berries don’t have a very long shelf life. Outside of where they are grown, they are often only available as a frozen fruit puree, dietary supplement, dried powder or pressed juice.
Benefits of Acai
A single serving of acai is packed with naturally occurring vitamins and nutrients that help support overall health and vitality. They also have natural antioxidants, which support the body’s ability to heal.
