Have you tried Kefir? If not, maybe you should. Your body will thank you!
What is Kefir?
Kefir is a cultured dairy product with incredibly high probiotic content. It is similar to yogurt in texture and taste, but is actually developed a little differently and contains different strains of bacteria. It also contains beneficial yeast, vitamins, minerals and easily digestible complete proteins.
Kefir is made using “starter grains,” which are a combination bacteria and yeasts that interact with the milk when cultured at room temperature. It can be created with a number of different milks: cow, sheep, goat, soy, rice, and coconut. It’s even safer than yogurt for those who are lactose intolerant! The abundance of friendly yeast and bacteria in Kefir provide lactase, which is an enzyme that consumes most of the lactose left as a result of the culturing process.
Kefir has a creamy consistency and a slightly tart flavour, making it great for breakfast or a quick snack.
What are Kefir’s Benefits?
The probiotic content of Kefir lends itself to a number of great benefits, including:
Digestive Health: Kefir contains probiotics, which are great for digestive health in general since they contribute to a healthy gut microbiota. The gut-friendly strains in Kefir help to restore lost flora due to antibiotic treatment, poor diet, etc. which aid in digestion and relieving gastrointestinal discomfort.
Healthy Immunity: A healthy gut also means a healthy immune system! Kefir contains the bacteria strain Lactobacillus Kefiri, which can help defend against harmful bacteria like salmonella. It also contains biotin and folate, which both contribute to overall immune health and function.
Healthy Skin: Kefir contains a unique carbohydrate called Kefiran, which has been shown to help improve the quality of skin and healing. This, in conjunction with Kefir’s probiotic content, makes it very helpful for balancing out skin issues such as acne and rashes.
Still not convinced Kefir is your thing?
