Omega-3s provide calories to energize your body and have many functions in the heart, blood vessels, lungs and immune and endocrine systems. They are important for several functions in the body and can have a positive influence on your body and brain. Include these foods in your weekly menu for a delicious source of omega-3!
Seafood
Several varieties of fish and other underwater creatures have naturally occurring omega-3s, including:
- Mackerel
- Salmon
- Herring
- Sardines
- Anchovies
- Oysters
Shellfish are among the most nutritious foods you can eat. Mackerel and salmon are rich in various nutrients. Salmon is especially nutritious, as it contains important protein, vitamins and minerals. Sardines and anchovies are very small, oily fish that are also great sources of nutrients your body needs.
Walnuts
In addition to naturally occurring omega-3s, walnuts are loaded with vitamins and minerals that are important to help your body perform several natural processes.
Flaxseeds
Flaxseeds are small seeds that are often ground, milled or used to make flaxseed oil. Though small, they naturally occur with omega-3s and other vitamins and nutrients that help support overall health.
Chia Seeds
Chia seeds don’t only make green fur for the clay figurines from your childhood, they can also be a healthy addition to your diet. Many believe chia seeds originated in Central America where they were a staple in the ancient Aztec diet.
Chia seeds, with naturally occurring omega-3s, can be eaten raw or prepared when mixed in with your favorite dishes like yogurt, smoothies, cereal and more.
