5 Tips for Working Out in Warmer Weather

When temperatures rise, working out in the sunshine tends to become far more appealing for many people. Unfortunately, our bodies don’t often respond positively to the harsh temperatures in these warmer months.

If you prefer outdoor workouts – even in warmer weather – utilize these tips to keep yourself well and safe before, during and after your exercises.

Keep Yourself Hydrated

Keeping yourself hydrated is rule number one. You’ve heard it 1,000 times before, but it’s still important to stress the importance of hydration, especially if you plan on spending time outdoors under a blisteringly hot sun.

Keep in mind that your body also loses salt and electrolytes through your sweat in addition to water. Drink plenty of water, but maybe include an energy drink rich in electrolytes as well to help combat the loss of minerals.

Salty Snacks

If you’d rather stick to water, don’t worry, there is another way to supplement your natural salt loss – salty snacks! As we mentioned earlier, we lose salt through our sweat during workouts – especially in warmer temperatures – and salt depletion can contribute to heat-related discomfort.

Right after your workout, treat yourself to a handful of salted nuts, pumpkin seeds or even one cup of plain, low fat yogurt to help replenish this important mineral.

Dress Properly

One of the sad realities of working out in warmer weather months is that your favorite winter outfit isn’t going to do you any favors in the heat. It’s best to keep your workout wardrobe as breathable, lightweight and light-colored as possible. These kinds of materials will allow your sweat to evaporate, which will help you stay cooler!

Slather on Sunscreen

Depending on the time of day, how hot it is outside, and other factors like a person’s complexion, it’s totally possible to develop a nasty sunburn in just 10 minutes. The best way to combat this is by slathering a healthy layer of sunscreen across your entire body. Take special care to ensure you dab some on your face, the back of your neck and the back of your legs as these areas are often missed.

Listen to Your Body

Your body can quickly succumb to intense heat, especially while you’re working out. Know your body and know your limits and head back indoors to cool off before you begin to feel more than a little uncomfortable.
