What does fragrance-free mean?
Fragrance-free products are a great starting point when you want moisturising, cleansing or everyday care without added perfume. The term generally describes a formula made without ingredients added to give it a fragrance—but the front label is only the beginning of the story.
Fragrance-free does not necessarily mean completely odourless. Oils and other ingredients can have their own scent. My shopping tip: use the fragrance-free claim to shortlist products, then turn to the ingredient list to see what’s inside.
Fragrance-free vs unscented: what’s the difference?
These terms sound interchangeable, but they can describe different approaches. An unscented product may contain ingredients that mask the smell of its base formula. A fragrance-free product is intended to leave out added fragrance rather than simply smell neutral.
If avoiding added perfume is your goal, start with products described as fragrance-free rather than relying on an unscented claim. A quick sniff cannot tell you whether fragrance ingredients are present, so the wording and ingredient list are more useful shopping tools.
How to find fragrance in an ingredient list
Start by scanning the full list for “fragrance,” “parfum” or “perfume.” These are useful signals that a product may not match your fragrance-free preference. Fragrance mixtures may appear under a collective name rather than listing every component separately.
You may also see names such as limonene, linalool, citral, geraniol or eugenol. These substances can occur in fragrance mixtures and essential oils. Their names alone do not explain why they are in a formula, but they are worth a closer look—especially if you already know there is a specific ingredient you want to avoid.
Are essential oils fragrance-free?
Plant-based scent is still scent. Lavender oil, peppermint oil and citrus peel oils can give a formula an aroma, even when the packaging emphasises “natural” ingredients or “no synthetic fragrance.” Those claims are not the same as fragrance-free.
NCCIH describes essential oils as concentrated plant extracts used in aromatherapy. For a routine without added scent, look beyond perfume terminology and consider aromatic oils too. Not every botanical ingredient is a fragrance, however: a plant-derived moisturising ingredient and an essential oil do not automatically serve the same purpose.
Is fragrance-free better for sensitive skin?
Fragrance-free can be a helpful starting point for sensitive-skin shopping. MedlinePlus identifies perfumes and fragrances among possible contact dermatitis triggers, and its eczema guidance recommends avoiding products containing perfumes. That makes added fragrance a useful thing to screen for when simplifying a routine.
Still, fragrance-free does not guarantee that every ingredient will suit every person. Treat “sensitive skin,” “hypoallergenic” and “natural” as descriptions to investigate, not substitutes for reading the formula. Choose for the whole job you need done: a comfortable cleanse, a richer moisturiser or a lighter everyday lotion.
How to choose fragrance-free soap and body lotion
Start with the category you use most often. BIOVEA’s VITAMIN E INTENSIVE THERAPY BODY LOTION (Fragrance-Free) is one option to explore if you prefer a lotion format. If you enjoy a cleansing bar, MAXIMUM STRENGTH NEEM OIL BAR SOAP (Fragrance Free) is another fragrance-free-labelled option to compare. Neither needs to be completely odourless to fit that description.
My quick shopping routine: look for the fragrance-free claim, scan for perfume terms and aromatic oils, then pick a format you’ll enjoy using consistently. For a formula-specific question, check the current label or ask a qualified professional.
Frequently asked questions
- Can fragrance-free products still have a smell?
- Yes. Ingredients can have a natural odour even when no fragrance is added. A noticeable smell does not, by itself, prove that a product contains added perfume.
- Is unscented the same as fragrance-free?
- Not necessarily. Unscented products may use ingredients to mask odours. If you want to avoid added fragrance, a fragrance-free claim plus a review of the ingredient list is a more useful starting point.
- What ingredients should I look for when avoiding fragrance?
- Start with fragrance, parfum and perfume. Then look for aromatic essential oils and names such as limonene or linalool. Some ingredients have more than one function, so an ingredient name may not reveal its purpose in the formula.
- Does hypoallergenic mean fragrance-free?
- No. Hypoallergenic and fragrance-free describe different things. A hypoallergenic claim does not tell you whether perfume or essential oils are included.
